Birthday 2026
Happy Birthday, Dear Venu!
In the chaos of the resuscitation bay, where seconds decide stories and courage becomes protocol, your contribution to Emergency Medicine in India stands like a true team leader — calm under pressure, visionary in action, and relentlessly committed to saving systems as much as saving lives.
You have not just built departments and trained doctors; you have helped create a generation of emergency physicians who now carry the spirit of EM across the country and abroad. May your life continue to have the strength of a code blue response, the precision of a rapid sequence intubation, and the impact of a perfectly coordinated mass casualty activation.
Wishing you good health, endless energy, and many more years of leading from the front. Respect, gratitude, and EM spirit always!

From “Useless” to Indispensable: The Voice Behind the Emergency Line
In 2011, when we launched the Angels ambulance network, we faced a critical decision: Who should answer the 102 emergency calls? Who should be the first voice a distressed caller hears?
We decided to challenge conventional thinking. We didn’t hire traditional operators. We hired paraplegic wheelchair users—survivors who knew the weight of trauma and the urgency of waiting for help.
Years later, at a recent gathering of the All Kerala Wheelchair Rights Federation, one of our first operators, Mr. Mohammadali, took the stage. He described those days at the console as the “most beautiful days of our life.” He spoke of how society had once labeled them “useless,” and how this role gave them not just employment, but dignity.
It was a powerful reminder that true innovation isn’t just about technology or protocols. It’s about recognizing human potential where others fail to see it.
I’ve written a new blog post about this journey—the unspoken bond between those who suffer and those who serve, and why our emergency systems must be built on trust and inclusion.ge; it requires a synchronized team. We recently put our protocols to the test at Malabar Medical College, Kozhikode with a full-scale Poly-Trauma Mock Drill.
We placed a heavy emphasis on the logistics of saving a life—specifically the Critical Transport and Handover phases.
We drilled down on:
- The Checklist: Ensuring nothing is missed during critical transport.
- The Transfer: Safely moving patients from primary to tertiary care,
- The Talk: Using closed-loop communication to ensure orders are heard and executed correctly.
The pre-drill training paid off, and the post-drill feedback session provided excellent insights for future improvements. Great work by everyone involved!
Simulating the Chaos: Mastering the Trauma Pathway.
Managing a poly-trauma patient requires more than just medical knowledge; it requires a synchronized team. We recently put our protocols to the test at Malabar Medical College, Kozhikode with a full-scale Poly-Trauma Mock Drill.

A Sanctuary of Time and Thought
This new space is more than just four walls and a desk; it is a curation of my life’s journey. Surround me here are the echoes of the last 25 years—tangible memories, lessons learned, and the milestones that have defined my path.
But this room isn’t a museum; it is a workshop for the mind. It is a dedicated sanctuary of silence where I can sit peacefully, away from the noise of the world. Here, amidst the comfort of the past, I find the focus to read deeply, write with clarity, and prepare for what lies ahead. It is the grounding point where the wisdom of yesterday meets the potential of tomorrow.

April 19, 2026 | EM.ed Care 2026 – Skill Enhancement & Simulation Workshop
EM.ed Care 2026: Advancing Emergency Care in Rural Kerala
I am delighted to share the success of EM.ed Care 2026, a pioneering Skill Enhancement and Simulation Workshop conducted at Relief Hospital & Trauma Centre, Kondotty. This event marked a significant milestone as the first program of its kind in a rural Kerala setting, receiving immense appreciation from all participants and contributors.
The Mission: Empowering Clinicians
Medical emergencies are inevitable, and timely intervention often determines the outcome between life and death. With this vision, we welcomed 24 junior doctors from rural Kerala for a full day of intensive, hands-on training. The goal was to equip them with 10 essential life-saving techniques that can make a critical difference in emergency situations.
A Unique Learning Experience
Following a strict no-lecture approach, the workshop focused entirely on practical learning and skill mastery.
In the morning sessions, participants rotated through 10 skill stations, covering key procedures such as airway management, intubation, intraosseous access, application of pelvic binders, and EFAST.
In the afternoon, the training progressed into high-fidelity moulage simulations. Participants worked in groups to manage complex emergency scenarios, including polytrauma, cardiac arrest, pediatric emergencies, and acute stroke, replicating real-world clinical challenges.

To witness the Athirathram is to witness the very embodiment of the Yajna—a moment where the ancient past meets a protected and hopeful future.
A Moment of Grace: Reflections on Athirathram
Witnessing the Athirathram Mahayagam in Kozhikode was a deeply transformative experience, where ancient wisdom and the present moment came together in perfect harmony. Seeing Dr. Venugopalan P. P. being honored amidst sacred chants was a powerful reminder that true wealth lies in the preservation of knowledge and service to humanity.
The Athirathram is more than a ritual. It is a collective prayer for peace, environmental harmony, and cultural continuity. Standing among thousands at Veda Mahamandiram, I felt a profound sense of belonging and connection to something far greater than myself.
This historic event, organized by Kasyapa Veda Research Foundation, beautifully blended tradition with modern preparedness. With emergency care led by Dr. Venugopalan in collaboration with leading institutions, the gathering remained both spiritually enriching and safely managed.
I left with a renewed sense of faith, humility, and gratitude. To witness Athirathram is to witness the essence of Yajna itself, where the ancient past meets a protected and hopeful future.

February 15, 2026 | Book Release of “Myths and Realities of OCD
A Powerful Debut by a 17-Year-Old Author
I recently had the pleasure of attending the release of “Myths and Realities of OCD” at KP Kesavamenon Hall in Kozhikode.
What makes this book remarkable is its author: Ms. Maliha, a 17-year-old psychology student.
In a world full of misinformation about mental health, Maliha has created a guide that is simple, evidence-based, and quickly readable. She unravels the myths surrounding OCD with a narration style that is highly impressive for someone so young. The book’s design and layout are equally elegant, making it an accessible read for everyone.
The event was a sweet reunion of sorts, as Maliha is the daughter of my close friend and MBBS batchmate, Dr. M.K. Muneer (MLA). It was fitting that another of our batchmates, Dr. Preetha Remesh, did the honors of releasing the book.
I was deeply impressed by Maliha’s attitude and devotion to her subject. It is inspiring to see the younger generation tackling such vital topics with such clarity.
February 13-15, 2026 | 4th ATLS Program – Advanced Trauma Life Support
Returning to where it started: A nostalgic day at the Aster Medical Simulation Center.
It was a distinct privilege to return as faculty for the 4th ATLS course at the Aster Medical Simulation Center in Mankav.
Stepping back into this center brought a wave of nostalgia. It feels like just yesterday that establishing this facility was a long-held dream of mine—a dream that eventually became reality thanks to the wholehearted support of Mr. Farhan Yasin, Mr. Lukman Ponmadath, and Sri U Basheer.
This specific ATLS course was established exactly one year ago, a milestone made possible by the guidance of Prof MC Misra and Dr. Radhesh Nambiar. Seeing it thrive today is incredibly rewarding.
Even though I have moved on to new chapters in my career, seeing this center continue to shape the future of trauma care fills me with immense pride.
January 26, 2026 | Dr. Venugopalan Had the Honour of Unfurling the National Flag and Receiving the Guard of Honour
When My Heart Beat in Rhythm with the Nation 🇮🇳
Today, as India celebrates its 77th Republic Day, I experienced a moment that will remain etched in my soul forever.
I was bestowed with the distinct privilege of unfuirling the National Flag at Meitra Hospital, receiving the Guard of Honour, and addressing our dedicated security and hospital staff. In my entire life, this was a first. As the Tricolor unfurled against the sky, I didn’t just see a flag; I felt a profound synchronization. My heart was truly beating along with the heart of this great nation.
It was, without a doubt, the most exhilarating moment of my life.
I stand here today, bursting with pride—Proud to be an Indian. I am witnessing our vibrant culture fly high and our great country travel boldly towards self-sufficiency. It brings me immense joy to see talent recognized, especially with 7 Padma Awards coming home to Kerala this year. It is a testament to the brilliance that thrives in our soil.
Just as our nation marches forward, so does my second home. Meitra is travelling towards excellence. As we move into the coming year, we are stepping into the next level of expansion. With our JCI accreditation, the introduction of new specialties, and the commencement of our second phase of development, we are soaring to new heights.
I am deeply proud of my identity today—Proud to be an Indian, and proud to be a Meitraian.
My gratitude to my Nation and my Institution knows no bounds.
Jai Hind. 🇮🇳

January 16, 2026 | Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) Autumn Diploma Ceremony
A Pinnacle of Achievement: Celebrating Neetu and Kamel Dev’s FRCEM Graduation
Today marked the fulfillment of a truly great journey and a milestone that fills our hearts with immense pride. We had the distinct honor of attending the FRCEM Autumn ceremony to witness our daughter, Dr. Neetu, and our son-in-law, Dr. Kamel Dev, officially graduate as Fellows of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (FRCEM).
Standing there today, the overriding emotions were sheer excitement and deep, resounding pride. To watch them achieve this pinnacle, just a couple of years after they secured their Membership (MRCEM), was an incredibly moving experience for us, not only as their parents but also as mentors watching them grow in this demanding field.
Their journey to this day has been defined by dedication and hard work. They embarked on the path of Emergency Medicine together in 2019 at Aster MIMS. Their commitment soon took them to the UK, where they initially served for a short span as Senior House Officers (SHOs) at the Exeter NHS Trust. For the past two years, they have been working diligently as Registrars at Hillingdon NHS Trust. It was during this intense period—balancing the demanding clinical responsibilities of a Registrar with rigorous academic study—that they successfully completed the challenging components of the FRCEM.
The convocation ceremony itself was a splendid occasion, made even more special by unexpected reunions. It was a joy to reconnect with several of my former residents who are also making their mark in the field. Seeing Dr. Prem Sankar, Dr. Rose Kunnath, Dr. Harikrishnan, Dr. Manaswita, and Dr. Surya there added a wonderful layer of professional fellowship to an already momentous day.
It was truly a great day celebrating the hard-earned success of Neetu and Kamel Dev. We are excited to see what the future holds for these two exceptional Emergency Medicine consultants.

It was a pleasure to attend this ATLS course, resuming my association as faculty, a role I have held since 2009. The course continues to be a well-conducted, well-structured, and focused educational experience. It consistently provides an excellent opportunity for interaction for both students and faculty.
The two-and-a-half-day format is highly effective, ensuring that students receive ample opportunity to learn the essential principles of managing a polytrauma case, even in limited resource settings.
Faculty and Leadership
The course was expertly directed by Dr. Radesh Numbair in Kozhikode. He was supported by a highly capable team of faculty members, including Drs. Jinesh, Johnson, Nirmal Peter, and Kirishbakumar. Their combined expertise ensured a high-quality learning environment.
Nostalgia and Center Legacy
Attending this course was a deeply nostalgic experience. The Aster Simulation Center in Kozhikode is a facility that I had the privilege of establishing, and it stands as my last project with Aster before my departure. Seeing the center actively hosting such a critical course was immensely gratifying.

🌟A Reflecting on the AHA Meet 2025 🌟
I recently attended the AHA 2025 Guidelines Rollout at the Park Inn Hotel (Dec 2-3), and I must say, it was an exemplary blend of academic rigor and genuine camaraderie.
The scientific sessions were rich in content, sparking thought-provoking discussions and activities that gave me plenty of new ideas to take home. However, what made this meeting truly special were the moments in between.
From the pre-meet faculty discussions in Srimon’s room to the eclectic music night that took us from Rafi Sahib’s classics to high-energy beats, the bonding was incredible. The hospitality reached its peak with a homely gathering at Sachin’s residence, where meeting his father was a cherished moment.
I want to extend a sincere thank you to the organizers who made this flawless: Marida, Sachin, Biswas, Srimon, Anoop, and our very own “shy” movie producer. Even the smallest details, like the AHA pin, diary, and carry bag, were curated with care.
Leaving Trichur with a bag full of new thoughts and memories that are carved in my heart forever.
