A tribute to the courage, resilience, and dedication of EMS professionals
A few years ago, while working with MMC, Mr. Jasim, an enthusiastic EMS professional, was transporting a critically ill patient on a ventilator when their Mobile ICU was involved in a serious road traffic accident.
Jasim sustained severe, life-threatening injuries, including significant spinal cord trauma. Yet, despite the immense challenges he faced, he survived with his spirit and dedication to emergency medical services stronger than ever.
During the recent EMS Convocation Day at MMC, I had the privilege of presenting Jasim with a memento in recognition of his incredible courage and resilience.
His journey is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices EMS professionals make every day. They put themselves in harm's way to ensure that others receive timely care when they need it most.
I am deeply humbled to have been part of this moment and salute Mr. Jasim—a true savior, survivor, and inspiration to all of us.

A personal experience of how continuous glucose monitoring changed my approach to health and nutrition.

Over the past year, using a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) has significantly changed my understanding of glucose management, nutrition, and personal health. The insights from continuous monitoring helped me better understand how food and daily habits affected my glucose levels.
During this period, I used three different CGM models—Tracky, Abbott FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus, and Linx—and shared my personal experience with each, including ease of use, technology, reliability, and customer support.
Based on my experience, Linx CGM emerged as my preferred choice because of its ease of use, lightweight design, app experience, affordability, and responsive after-sales support.
Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with any of these companies. All products were purchased using my own money, and these views are based solely on my personal experience.

A personal appeal for greater accountability and responsible driving on our roads.

Today, I witnessed a deeply concerning incident at Eranhipalam Junction, Kozhikode, where a private city bus allegedly drove through the wrong side of the road to bypass traffic, creating congestion and putting the safety of motorists and pedestrians at risk. The continuous honking by another bus behind it only added to the confusion and distress for those navigating the junction.
As an emergency physician, I have seen firsthand the devastating consequences of road traffic accidents. Such reckless behaviour has no place on our roads. I have submitted a formal complaint to the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) and hope appropriate action is taken.
Road safety is a shared responsibility. Every driver, especially those operating public transport, must follow traffic rules and prioritize human life over haste. Only through responsible driving and strict enforcement can we make our roads safer for everyone.

Understanding lightning risks and knowing the right response can prevent serious injuries and save lives.
Lightning strikes can cause life threatening injuries through direct strikes, ground currents, side flashes, and electrical conduction. In his recent public awareness article, Dr. Venugopalan P.P. shares practical guidance on staying safe during thunderstorms, both indoors and outdoors.
Key recommendations include following the 30 to 30 rule, avoiding electrical appliances and plumbing during storms, seeking shelter in enclosed buildings or vehicles, and remembering that lightning victims are safe to touch. Immediate CPR can be lifesaving in cases of cardiac arrest following a lightning strike.
By promoting awareness and preparedness, Dr. Venugopalan continues to advocate for simple preventive measures that can protect lives during severe weather events.

The latest public health data highlights the importance of continuous evaluation and evidence based healthcare planning.
The Sample Registration System (SRS) Statistical Report 2024 reports an increase in Kerala's Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) from 5 to 8 deaths per 1,000 live births. While Kerala continues to have the lowest IMR in India, the change has prompted discussions among healthcare professionals about whether it reflects a statistical variation or emerging public health challenges.
Dr. Venugopalan P.P. emphasizes that public health data should be viewed as an opportunity to strengthen healthcare systems. Continuous monitoring, evidence based policymaking, and focused attention to urban maternal and neonatal care remain essential for sustaining long term improvements in health outcomes.

A call for smarter enforcement that protects both public safety and essential workers.
A recent report has sparked an important discussion on the need to balance public safety with the dignity of frontline workers. As drug traffickers increasingly misuse delivery networks and emergency vehicles, law enforcement faces the challenge of preventing illegal activities without unfairly targeting honest professionals.
Dr. Venugopalan P.P. emphasizes that while effective policing is essential, emergency responders and gig workers should not bear the burden of blanket suspicion. Strengthening digital verification, improving licensing standards, and relying on intelligence driven investigations can help protect communities while ensuring that those who serve them are treated with fairness and respect.
