A scenic weekend drive to Cherukara, filled with nostalgia, familiar flavours, and cherished memories.

Every weekend, my wife and I return to Cherukara, my childhood village, to unwind and reconnect with our roots.

Our journey has become much more enjoyable with the new National Highway. What was once a tiring 2.5-hour drive through Malappuram traffic is now a refreshing 1.5-hour trip from Kozhikode. In earlier days, we also enjoyed the scenic train journey through Nilambur, a nostalgic experience in its own right.

One tradition, however, remains unchanged: our evening tea stop at a humble homemade tea shop in Karinganad. A cup of freshly prepared tea and their delicious Kalathappam take me back more than 50 years to the flavours of my childhood.

It is remarkable how a new road can make the journey home easier, while a familiar taste can transport us back in time.

In our fast-paced lives, returning to our roots reminds us of the simple joys that shaped who we are. Sometimes, all we need is a weekend away, a familiar road, and a taste of home.

എന്ന് ആരോ പറഞ്ഞത് കേട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ആ വാക്കുകൾ കേട്ടപ്പോൾ എന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ ആദ്യം വന്നത് താങ്കളെയാണ്.

കാരണം, താങ്കളുടെ ശിഷ്യനായി പഠിക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞത് എന്റെ പ്രൊഫഷണൽ ജീവിതത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വിലപ്പെട്ട ഭാഗങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ്.

താങ്കൾ ഞങ്ങളുടെ Emergency Service Nursing Course Director ആയിരുന്ന കാലം ഇന്നും എന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ മായാതെ നിൽക്കുന്നു.

MIMS Hospital-ലെ Emergency Department-ൽ ജോലി ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ താങ്കളുടെ കീഴിൽ പഠിച്ചിരുന്ന ആ കാലഘട്ടം
അത് ഒരു കോഴ്സ് പൂർത്തിയാക്കാനുള്ള കാലം മാത്രമായിരുന്നില്ല.

ഒരു നഴ്സായി എങ്ങനെ ചിന്തിക്കണം, ഒരു എമർജൻസി സാഹചര്യത്തെ എങ്ങനെ സമീപിക്കണം, അറിവിനൊപ്പം ഉത്തരവാദിത്വവും ആത്മവിശ്വാസവും എങ്ങനെ വളർത്തണം — ഇതൊക്കെയും പഠിച്ച കാലമായിരുന്നു അത്.

അന്ന് താങ്കൾ ക്ലാസിൽ പറഞ്ഞ പല കാര്യങ്ങളുടെയും യഥാർത്ഥ വില വർഷങ്ങൾ കഴിഞ്ഞാണ് എനിക്ക് കൂടുതൽ മനസ്സിലായത്.

കാലം കടന്നുപോയി.
പഠനം കഴിഞ്ഞു.
ഓരോരുത്തരും സ്വന്തം പ്രൊഫഷണൽ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ തിരക്കുകളിലേക്ക് കടന്നു.

പക്ഷേ, ചില അധ്യാപകർ ക്ലാസ് മുറിയിൽ മാത്രം അവശേഷിക്കുന്നവരല്ല. അവർ നമ്മോടൊപ്പം നമ്മുടെ പ്രൊഫഷണൽ ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് വരുന്നു.

എന്റെ കാര്യത്തിലും അങ്ങനെയാണ്.

ഇന്നും എന്റെ പ്രൊഫഷണൽ ജീവിതത്തിൽ ഒരു എമർജൻസി സാഹചര്യം വരുമ്പോൾ, എന്തെങ്കിലും ഒരു കാര്യം കാണുമ്പോൾ, ഒരു തീരുമാനമെടുക്കേണ്ടി വരുമ്പോൾ — അറിയാതെ തന്നെ താങ്കൾ പകർന്നു തന്ന അറിവുകളും ശിക്ഷണവും മനസ്സിലേക്ക് വരാറുണ്ട്.

ഞാൻ അത് എന്റെ സുഹൃത്തുക്കളോട് പറയുമ്പോൾ അവർ പലപ്പോഴും ചിരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് പറയാറുണ്ട്:

“നിനക്ക് എല്ലാത്തിലും വേണു സാർ ആണല്ലോ!”

അപ്പോൾ എന്റെ ഉള്ളിൽ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക സന്തോഷം തോന്നും.

അതെ… ശരിയാണ്. എനിക്ക് എല്ലാത്തിലും വേണു സാർ തന്നെയാണ്. ❤️

കാരണം താങ്കൾ എനിക്ക് ഒരു അധ്യാപകൻ മാത്രമായിരുന്നില്ല.

എന്റെ പ്രൊഫഷണൽ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഒരു ഘട്ടത്തിൽ വഴികാട്ടിയായ ഒരാളായിരുന്നു താങ്കൾ.
എന്റെ അറിവിന് അടിത്തറ പാകിയ ഒരാളായിരുന്നു.
*എന്റെ കഴിവുകളിൽ വിശ്വാസം വളർത്തിയ ഒരാളായിരുന്നു.
ഒരു നല്ല Emergency Nurse ആകുന്നതിന്റെ അർത്ഥം പഠിപ്പിച്ച ഒരാളായിരുന്നു.*

താങ്കളുടെ ശിഷ്യനാണെന്ന് പറയുമ്പോൾ ഇന്നും എനിക്ക് അഭിമാനമാണ്.

വർഷങ്ങൾ കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും “ഞാൻ വേണു സാറിന്റെ വിദ്യാർത്ഥിയാണ്” എന്ന് പറയാൻ കഴിയുന്നത് എനിക്ക് ഒരു വലിയ സന്തോഷമാണ്.

*താങ്കളുടെ ഒരു നല്ല വിദ്യാർത്ഥിയായിരിക്കണം എന്ന ആഗ്രഹം ഇന്നും എന്റെ മനസ്സിലുണ്ട്.
താങ്കൾ എന്നിൽ പകർന്നു തന്ന അറിവിനും ശിക്ഷണത്തിനും വിശ്വാസത്തിനും കഴിയുന്നത്ര നീതി പുലർത്തുന്ന ഒരു പ്രൊഫഷണലായി തുടരണമെന്നാണ് എന്റെ ആഗ്രഹം.*

ഒരു നല്ല അധ്യാപകന്റെ മഹത്വം അദ്ദേഹം പഠിപ്പിച്ച പാഠങ്ങളിൽ മാത്രമല്ല;
*അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ശിഷ്യന്മാരുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലും,അവരുടെ പ്രവർത്തികളിലും,
അവർ മറ്റുള്ളവർക്ക് പകർന്നു നൽകുന്ന അറിവുകളിലും കൂടിയാണ്.*

ഇന്ന് എന്റെ പ്രൊഫഷണൽ ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് തിരിഞ്ഞുനോക്കുമ്പോൾ, MIMS Hospital-ലെ ആ Emergency Department-ും, താങ്കളുടെ ക്ലാസുകളും, താങ്കൾ നൽകിയ ശിക്ഷണവും — എല്ലാം എന്റെ യാത്രയിലെ മറക്കാനാവാത്ത അധ്യായങ്ങളാണ്.

എന്നെ പഠിപ്പിച്ചതിന് മാത്രം അല്ല

എന്നെ ഒരു നല്ല നഴ്സായി വളരാൻ സഹായിച്ചതിന്,

The article explains the immediate steps to control bleeding, prevent complications, and respond effectively until medical help is available. By promoting awareness of basic emergency care, Dr. Venugopalan continues his mission of empowering the public with life-saving first aid knowledge.

A personal appeal for greater accountability and responsible driving on our roads.

Today, I witnessed a deeply concerning incident at Eranhipalam Junction, Kozhikode, where a private city bus allegedly drove through the wrong side of the road to bypass traffic, creating congestion and putting the safety of motorists and pedestrians at risk. The continuous honking by another bus behind it only added to the confusion and distress for those navigating the junction.

As an emergency physician, I have seen firsthand the devastating consequences of road traffic accidents. Such reckless behaviour has no place on our roads. I have submitted a formal complaint to the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) and hope appropriate action is taken.

Road safety is a shared responsibility. Every driver, especially those operating public transport, must follow traffic rules and prioritize human life over haste. Only through responsible driving and strict enforcement can we make our roads safer for everyone.

The latest public health data highlights the importance of continuous evaluation and evidence based healthcare planning.

A call for smarter enforcement that protects both public safety and essential workers.

A recent report has sparked an important discussion on the need to balance public safety with the dignity of frontline workers. As drug traffickers increasingly misuse delivery networks and emergency vehicles, law enforcement faces the challenge of preventing illegal activities without unfairly targeting honest professionals.

Dr. Venugopalan P.P. emphasizes that while effective policing is essential, emergency responders and gig workers should not bear the burden of blanket suspicion. Strengthening digital verification, improving licensing standards, and relying on intelligence driven investigations can help protect communities while ensuring that those who serve them are treated with fairness and respect.
